This Saturday, May 2nd, the Los Angeles gallery, KP Projects will host the opening reception for a new group exhibition titled Small Wonders. Referred to as “A Springtime Survey,” the show’s exact theme is a bit difficult for me to decipher. There is a stated focus on small- to medium-sized works, but there’s a really great Todd Schorr piece that’s no less than 4 feet high. There is mention of the roster being comprised of artists the gallery has worked with over the years, but also a claim that it effectively operates as a preview for upcoming solo shows later this year. The clearest concept presented is that the pieces were selected due to “resonance” and “contemplation.”
Not to undermine the stated aim of KP Projects, which we love, but the throughline of the work in this exhibition seems to be that these are simply great pieces by some heavy hitters, and, quite honestly, that’s more than enough for me. Pop surrealist powerhouses Craola, Audrey Kawasaki, Travis Louie, and Victor Castillo are shown alongside such internationally recognized street artists as Miss Van, Dalek, and Shephard Fairey. Landscapes by Todd Carpenter, Edward Walton Wilcox, and Eric Nash will be on display with the photography of late photojournalist Henri Dauman and legendary street photographer Vivian Maier. From their chosen mediums to the year — if not decades — of production, this collection is all over the place in the best way possible. That said, the works do all draw the viewer in, albeit in very different ways.
The following is the official statement from the gallery:
“Small Wonders is a thoughtfully curated exhibition celebrating the quiet power and enduring allure of small to medium scale works. Bringing together an expansive roster of artists the gallery has worked with over the years, the exhibition highlights pieces that reward attention with moments of beauty, contemplation, humor, and discovery.
In a cultural landscape often defined by spectacle and scale, these works demonstrate that impact is not always measured in size, but in resonance. Each piece acts as a point of entry into an artist’s process, memory, and imagination.
The exhibition also serves as a preview for some our next exhibitions : Masakatsu Sashie (Opening July 25th), Rafael Silveira and Flavia Itibere (Opening August 29th) and Todd Schorr (Opening November)
To celebrate the Spring season, the exhibition invites viewers to pause, take a closer look, and carry a sense of wonder into the everyday.“
Ultimately, Small Wonders assembles some great pieces by some of my favorite artists, providing the opportunity to catch them all together. If there is one prerequisite for inclusion above all else, it obviously has to be one of quality. If you have the ability to make it out to this one, consider taking the opportunity.
