Northwest-based artist, Scott Musgrove has been a mainstay in the pop-surrealist and underground contemporary art world for the better part of 3 decades. Within that time, he has forged an aesthetic that is instantly identifiable yet infinitely expanding, regularly merging the fantastical with the zoological and the mythical. His latest collection, Useless Animals, presents a series of works built around absurdist creatures that are visually perplexing, yet comforting. They are abstract and bizarre, yet feel as though they breathe and move despite lacking some of the most vital biological elements for survival. Some are missing heads. Some emit illuminating lighthouse beams like the iconic Drew Struzan poster art from John Carpenter‘s The Thing.
Featuring 11 new paintings, 9 drawings, and 9 sculptures, Musgrove‘s new solo exhibition offers his vision in various dimensions, scales, perspectives, variations, executions, and evolutions. His paintings have always had so much life to them, but witnessing his beings rendered as large-scale sculptures provides a whole new way to interact with his world. While the 2-dimensional work summons the viewer into their environment, these 3D pieces feel as though these supernatural beings have breached dimensions to infiltrate ours.
Useless Animals opens this Friday, April 10, at Roq la Rue and will remain on view at the Seattle gallery through May 2nd.
