This Saturday, November 22nd, KP Projects will host West Of Heaven, the new solo exhibition by artist, Eric Nash. Described as “a series of photorealistic charcoals that capture the subtle, surreal, and subliminal allure of California culture” this new collection of work is full of the majestic energy that permeates otherwise unassuming spaces of the urban landscape. Nash‘s pieces pay reverence to sun-faded signs and the hum of convenience store neon, the kind of weathered markers that reflect life while inhabiting and generating a soul of their own. It’s the sort of unintended beauty that can hypnotize those of us who recognize and appreciate it.

There’s a saying that life is what happens when you’re making other plans. West Of Heaven exudes that life through time-worn structures and advertisements promising escape and opportunity. The power of the monochromatic imagery relies on shadow and light to convey everything from time of day to temperature. I can feel the cool night breeze, the sting of the dust and sun, even hear the cars in the distance, and smell the parking lots. It’s our own memories and nostalgia that fill in the blanks: the colors, the sounds… the world. The fact that we even have the ability to summon the appropriate information to round out these 360-degree landscapes so organically is a miracle. It begs the question of why we hold on to this abstract and intangible knowledge and how it is so purely crystallized within us, always running in the background. And once this reality is pushed to the forefront and exposed to us, it raises questions about what genuine beauty is, what living a life truly means, and what we as individuals hold dear on the most cellular level.

Is there any amount of wealth or prestige you’d be willing to trade for if it meant losing access to the feeling of witnessing a liquor store at dusk or the faint smell of gasoline on the wind as a glass door creaks and your sneakers hit the mini mart floor? Your answer to that question will say a lot about yourself.

The press release explains that each of Eric‘s pieces “originates as a photograph shot by the artist, which is then meticulously drawn in charcoal on thick, smooth, 33 x 44 inch sheets 120lb Stonehenge paper.

Nash offers the additional insight into his work:

“At a very young age, I learned to see beauty and soul in the mundane. Years later my journey drew me to the California desert where I now live – a vast expanse of desire and dreams. I feel at home. These drawings are visual poems to these feelings and places, the reason I am an artist.”
