Tyler The Creator Releasing IGOR Halloween Costume
Looking to drop some loot on a pastel suit and a platinum blonde Prince Valiant wig this season? Oh buddy, I’ve got a deal for you
Regardless of if you are a fan of the Los Angeles hip hop collective, OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All), or not, their impact on the culture has been undeniable over the last decade. Aside from their work as a unit, they’ve gone on to spawn various related and solo projects from acts like Earl Sweatshirt, The Internet, Casey Veggies, Domo Genesis, and Frank Ocean, who is currently working to take over the planet on a Bond villain level. But if there’s a de-facto “leader” of this crew, it’s definitely Tyler The Creator, a moniker that is well deserved for someone as prolific as he has proven. From their Adult Swim program, Loiter Squad, to their extensive clothing line, Tyler has been front and center. Not only does he design the clothing, but the group’s album artwork, as well. And that’s not even mentioning the extensive production work that he’s put in on all of the various albums.
Tyler was the first to get any real attention for his solo output, starting with 2009‘s Bastard and his followup, Goblin, 2 years later. His infamous 2011 Late Night With Jimmy Fallon appearance performing the Goblin track “Sandwitches” with fellow Odd Future member, Hodgy Beats, saw them take a smoke-filled stage decorated with in lawn gnomes. Donning ski masks and backed by The Roots, they left their mark with a high energy performance that involved Tyler running up to the Fallon‘s desk, rapping in the faces of the guests, climbing over the couch and ending the segment by climbing onto host’s back and wrapping his legs around his torso, while he attempted to sign off into the camera. Mos Def‘s face even pops into frame of the zoomed in lens at the very end as the show, a major indirect endorsement for an up and coming artist to receive. I watched the appearance when it aired and, as far as impact, would have to equate it to Tribe Called Quest‘s Arsenio Hall performance that put Busta Rhymes on the map and helped launch him as a solo artist. Like many others, I definitely wanted to know who the fuck these kids were. Unfortunately, when I went back and listened to Bastard, the over-the-top rape, violence, and horrorcore elements turned me off. And this is coming from someone who ranks Brotha Lynch Hung‘s Season Of Da Siccness — an album that describes cooking and eating babies in detail — as a flat out classic and one of my all time favorite rap releases of all time. It just felt like Tyler he was trying way too hard and reaching for shock value that wasn’t landing for me.
The rapper/producer’s latest release, IGOR, is a world apart from his early stuff. It’s possible that I might need to go back and revisit his first efforts, but it’s hard to argue that his sound has definitely evolved. The biggest jump came with the critically acclaimed Scum Fuck Flower Boy in 2017, which welcomed in lush production on jazzzy R&B and soul-influenced material. IGOR only takes that further. This might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it seems like most real fans have been more than happy to follow him into this world and it’s proven much more difficult for detractors to dismiss his artistic talent on a larger scale. The reviews have been, more or less, universally positive. Although it technically dropped back in May, debuting at #1 on the US Billboard 200, psychical copies have only hit stores more recently. And while many folks out their are still waiting on their limited edition copies of the vinyl with the alternate cover art to arrive, Tyler and his site GOLFWANG are already throwing a new product at us for the Halloween season: an IGOR Halloween costume.
What does an album-related Halloween costume entail, you might ask? The answer to that is a pastel suit with a platinum-blonde Prince Valiant wig. This is the same getup that Tyler rocked (in a spumoni colorway) for the newly revived UK publication, Face, earlier this year; as well as in the video for his platinum selling single, “Earfquake.” Additionally, he’s been sporting this look throughout his live tour. The limited edition suits/costumes, which will appear on the shop today (October 24th) beginning at 12 noon Pacific / 3PM Eastern, will be available in 3 colorways: Powder Blue, Highlighter, and Pink. “All are fully lined cotton/poly/spandex suits and come equipped with a double button closure, an interior pocket on the jacket, single crease panels with an interior coin pocket on the trousers, and run true to size.”
Here’s what they look like.
Look how into it this guy is.
If you’re interested in dropping your loot on this thing, you can do so over at GOLFWANG.com. Expect this one to cost you a little bit, but if you’re really balling, you might want to pair it with the 18kt gold plated GOLF ring, and/or the belt buckle.
If you think about it, the release of a Halloween costume really isn’t that left field for an artist shop that already offers dodgeballs, ceramic angel statuettes, and mushroom cloud throw pillows (Merch Game KTA). The real question is, with only a week out from the holiday and a shop notorious for delays, are these even going to show up on time? My guess is that these will likely come with a delivery time guarantee and, if not, maybe it’s time to switch up your daily style regardless.
