Ty Segall Announces “Fudge Sandwich” Covers Album / Hear “I’m A Man” (Spencer Davis Group)
The prolific LA musician/songwriter pays tribute to The Grateful Dead, Gong, Amon Duul II, Funkadelic, Neil Young, & others on his upcoming release
Over the last decade, Los Angeles neo-garage-psych behemoth, Ty Segall has proven to be one of the most prolific artists in the game, and 2018 presents no indication of him slowing down in the slightest. Back in January, Ty put out the 19-track double album Freedom’s Goblin, while July provided us with the LP Joy, a collaboration with White Fence that follows their well-received 2012 record, Hair. At the end of the month, Segall is slated to release, Pre Strike Sweep, the sophomore effort for his band GØGGS, co-founded with Chris Shaw of Ex-Cult. Somewhere in the mix, he also self-released a cassette EP for a new project called The C.I.A., which features his wife, Denée Petracek Segall handling vocals, and is rounded out by frequent collaborator, Emmett Kelly aka Cairo Gang. Beyond that, he also appears on the latest King Tuff album, The Other, and produced the Birth Defects album, Everything Is Fine. So… that addresses the recorded output for the first 2/3 of the year, but I doubt that, given his track record, many who are aware of him would be surprised to discover that he’s not entirely finished yet. The latest project on deck for Ty will be Fudge Sandwich, an 11-track release consisting entirely of covers, which is slated to drop on October 26, less than a week into his upcoming solo acoustic tour.
Although he’s produced enough original material to fill the catalogs of several artists twice his age, Segall has proven that he’s more than eager to pay tribute to the works of others who have inspired him. Back In 2015, he released Ty Rex, a compilation of T. Rex/Tyrannosaurus Rex covers expanding on his previously released 6-song EP from Record Store Day 2011 of the same name. In fact, when I saw him the last time, it was at the 2017 Pickathon festival, and he ended the set by going into a fairly driving, high energy version of “Gut Feeling/Slap Your Mammy” from DEVO‘s monumental debut album, Q: Are We Not Men, A: We Are Devo. Fudge Sandwich continues to showcase the songwriter’s various influences, beyond the standard 13th Floor Elevators, and Stooges of the world that one might expect. Among the artists represented on the upcoming release are names like Amon Düül II, John Lennon, Sparks, War, Funkadelic, Rudimentary Peni, and The Grateful Dead. Check out the full track list and tour dates below, following the first single, a cover of “I‘m A Man” by The Spencer Davis Group.
