Last year, The Breeders embarked on a major tour celebrating the 30th Anniversary of their breakout 1993 sophomore LP, Last Splash. There was a deluxe reissue of the classic album promoted by a tour that saw the band circling the United States from August through October to play nearly as many shows as years since the music was first released. Just 3 days before we caught the final tour date in Seattle, the quartet was forced to cancel their scheduled performance at the Henry Miller Memorial Library in Big Sur. It’s a beautiful environment that I’ve always wanted to catch a show at, so I imagine that the cancellation was unfortunate for everyone involved. On the bright side, the Deal sisters and their band managed to make something positive out of an, otherwise, bummer of a situation.

Four days ago, The Breeders official Instagram account posted a brief teaser clip of a scenic landscape featuring majestic cliffs and rushing waves. The words “The Breeders” were superimposed over the footage along with the voice of Kim Deal stating, “We’re The Breeders and we’re playing at Big Sur in the Redwoods.” The caption only read today date (with emojis): “June 24th 👀 🌊 🎸”

Today, they release the video of a session that finds them playing a handful of tracks in the Redwoods, just as the clip suggested. Along with the video comes the following announcement on their IG page.

Last fall at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur our show was rained out. The sky cleared just as dusk fell & someone said: let’s go into the forest. So in a grove of redwoods we played a few songs for the hermit thrushes and spotted owls. Thank you Mark Satterthwaite & crew for filming it.
