SLOWTHAI And Denzel Curry Share Video For New Song “PSYCHO”
The critically acclaimed UK grime artist and the Florida emcee come together on a gritty, pummeling new collaboration with a video to match
I’ve been sleeping on slowthai. The British rapper has been earning ridiculous accolades for his debut full length, Nothing Great About Brittain, from appearing on the NME 100 list to being shortlisted for the 2019 Hyundai Mercury Prize. As far as respect among his peers on this side of the pond, the Bajan and Irish emcee has features on the latest Brockhampton and Tyler The Creator LPs, along with appearing on the single, “High Beams” by Australian electronic musician, Flume. Meanwhile, I’ve been letting everything slip past me. This dude was even performing here is Seattle a couple of days ago and, listening to his material since… it’s clear that I probably should have been there. There’s a versatility to his album that includes elements from punk and grime, with it shifting from the more introspective to all out manic in your face political commentary. The comparisons to a young Dizzee Rascal are understandable, because the influence is sprinkled in there, but he’s definitely working with his own voice and sound, while operating in a different climate influenced by such things as Brexit, social unrest, and his own personal experiences growing up surrounded by poverty and a more recent increase in level of racially motivated hate crimes.
On the brand new track titled “PSYCHO,” Ty is teaming up with another 24-year-old known for his aggression on the mic and an insatiable desire to keep pushing his work in new interesting directions. Florida‘s Denzel Curry recently released ZUU, earning quite a bit of critical acclaim in his own right. Already his 4th album, this latest effort is quite different from his previous concept album TA13OO, as well as everything that has come before it. Curry has been vocal about all of the various influences and interests that continue to shape him as an artist, with the most noticeable aspect being that he’s inspired by artists who push themselves, leave a unique impact, and carve lanes of their own. Not unlike slowthai, Denzel has also shown an affinity for high concept visuals and a reputation for high energy live shows. The two of these artists coming together seems like a no-brainer.
Produced by frequent slowthai collaborator, Kwes Darko, “Psycho” is a gritty pummeling track with a video to match. A multi-instrumentalist, Darko executive produced Nothing Great About Brittain and will be releasing the new track on his own label, This Is Forever. This drop isn’t completely out of the blue as Denzel and Ty have actually performed the song live at least twice before. The first came during Glastonbury in July, with them pulling it out once again, at Lollapalooza early last month. If you’re going to drop a video like this, however, you could pick a much worse day than Friday the 13th.
