PEDAL ERROR: EPISODE #14 – March 14, 2018
This week, the radio program pays tribute to Craig Mack & the 20th ann. of TNT by Tortoise, features a number of upcoming Record Store Day releases, & much more
People are dying folks… as you well know. Among those who have just passed on are legendary author/physicist, Stephen Hawking, and co-founder of Delicious Vinyl/Los Angeles DJ/producer for artists like Tone Loc and notable force behind the Beastie Boys classic Paul’s Boutique, Matt Dike. Also in the mix of the recently demised is rapper Craig Mack, the first artist to release a Platinum hit single for Sean “Puffy” Combs‘s Bad Boy Records label with the track “Flava In Ya Ear,” for which he even earned a Grammy nomination. Craig kind of fell to the wayside with the rise of Notorious BIG and, eventually, he went hardcore religious, relocating to South Carolina, but his impact was huge for the fledgling label and the music bangs as hard today as it ever did.
Each week from 11am – 1pm PST, I host my radio show, Pedal Error, on Hollow Earth Radio (KHUH-LP 104.9FM Seattle) under the pseudonym of DJ Crack Fox, and this week, it kicks off with a little nod to Mack, what he accomplished, and what he still may have, had his ongoing illness not resulted in fatal heart failure. We also touch on a number of recently announced titles for this year’s Record Store Day, which is coming up fast on April 21st. Beyond that, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of a post-rock classic, and play music from a Ghanaian athlete-turned-prolific Afro Cuban musician, a professor/author/visual artist/magazine editor/triphop DJ, psychedelic NYC neo-tribalists, a late 400lb up-and-coming soul rock powerhouse done in by an arm candy habit, a superhero-themed hip hop team up, an obscure early-80s UK living room 4-track banger, and much more. This marks the 14th episode of the program. Stream it in full below.
When you listen the show, there are always plenty of references made during it, and, many of them, you can find more about here on the site. But before that, I should clarify a statement that I make about the late soul/rock musician, James “Baby Huey” Ramey. His death was actually attributed to a heart attack, albeit one that was suffered in connection to his heroin use.
Aside from that, you can find out more about the new Czarface x MF Doom project, its pre-order details, etc., on our post about it HERE. I also make a reference to the interview that I conducted with Brian Degraw from Gang Gang Dance back in 2011. You can read that full interview piece HERE. You can also check out our detailed list of 15 Record Store Day Releases That Should Exist, by clicking HERE.
Most importantly, please make sure to check out Hollow Earth Radio. There’s a lot of good stuff going down. It’s non-profit, non-commercial radio with a ton of great programming and nobody else would likely ever let me have free reign to play whatever I feel like and present it the way that I feel that it needs to be done.
