Kim Deal Releases New Solo Single “Coast”
The head Breeder offers up a song produced by the late Steve Albini. Originally written in 2020, it has roots as far back as the year 2000. Hear it now!
After spending last year touring in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the classic Breeders album, Last Splash, and its corresponding deluxe vinyl reissue, Kim Deal is staying active. Today the indie-rock icon and former Pixies bassist releases a new solo single titled “Coast.” This song marks the first for 4AD Records to be ever be released under her own name. One notable aspect of the track is that it was recorded by the late Steve Albini, who passed away in May from a heart attack at the age of 61. A close friend and longtime supporter of Kim, Albini produced just about every Breeders studio LP besides Last Splash, as well as the Pixies album, Surfer Rosa.
There is no word on whether or not the single will become part of a larger release down the road, but it does have this sweet cover art of a flamingo sitting on an amp.
You can listen to he track below, after the following details taken from the press release.
“Coast” was written in 2020 after being at her friend Mike Montgomery’s wedding when the house band, The Grape Whizzers, jammed Jimmy Buffett’s 1977 “Margaritaville” with “revelatory levels of low self-esteem.” But the song’s roots reach back as far as 2000, when Kim was staying on the Massachusetts island of Nantucket. An unlikely retreat for the Ohio native (“I hate the sun, beach and watersports,”), she spent a rough off-season where young workers “check the WAM” for surfing conditions.
“Coast” was recorded by Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago. Lindsay Glover and Breeders alum Mando Lopez are the song’s rhythm section, Kim’s sister Kelley plays guitar and horns are by Chicago marching band Mucca Pazza.
