It’s no secret that J Mascis is a fan of The Cure. Back in 1989, Dinosaur Jr put out a 7-inch of them covering “Just Like Heaven” through SST Records. The song by the influential British group remains a staple of the trio’s live sets 36 years later.
In a recent interview Mascis did for Uncut about The Cure, he shared: “Robert Smith’s guitars have a washy sort of sound that encompasses you, and his voice has a great pure tone. I related to the music. It made me feel “Oh yeah, this is where I’m at, this guy’s out there feeling the same thing, it comforted me.”
Today, SUB POP releases a digital single of J covering the 1987 tune, “Breathe.” A bit of a deep cut for The Cure, “Breathe” was originally released as a B-side to the Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me 💋 single “Catch” in the UK and the “Just Like Heaven” 12-inch in the US. The song later appeared on the Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me expanded reissue, and the Join The Dots B-Sides and rarities comp.
You can listen to J Mascis‘s new rendition of “Breathe” on Bandcamp and streaming services. The digital single can also be purchased through Bandcamp or the SUB POP website.
