Known for his otherworldly drum work, Chris Corsano has collaborated in projects alongside a wide array of artists including Thurston Moore, Jim O’Rourke, Nels Cline, Ben Chasny, Sir Richard Bishop, Paul Flaherty, Evan Parker, Alan Licht, Kim Gordon, and Bill Nace. Additionally, he has provided instrumentation to releases by Bjork, Jandek, Sunburned Hand Of The Man, Six Organs Of Admittance, and endless others. Beyond prolific, he has produced a TON of music with an ever-growing list of endlessly talented collaborators, displaying a stylistic range that is as impressive as his penchant for experimentation. Now, Corsano is showing what he’s truly capable of independently.

The Key (Became the Important Thing [& Then Just Faded Away])

On his upcoming solo release through Drag City Records, The Key (Became The Important Thing [& Then Just Faded Away]), Chris Corsano performs every part himself while “overdubbing each frenzied instrument into six explosive tracks.” The label further describes the new LP as follows…

Chris’ solo approach is rooted in the exploration of elements of extended technique via possibilities facilitated by a self-made string drum. The Key (Became The Important Thing [& Then Just Faded Away]) brings his encompassing focus on free improvisation and noise into a granular fusion with acoustic experiments and hot-wired ideations of hard rock riffing and post-punk sound. Nodding to the guitar sounds of his favorite collaborators in striking self-conversation with his own rhythm, it’s a fusion of all things Corsano — one to strike the Earth’s core on June 28, 2024!

Today Corsano releases the 2nd single, “The Full-Measure Wash Down.” With its discordant twangs and chops laid over a serpentine bass groove and shuffling beat, it’s a driving, visceral track that gradually evolves and blooms into the sonic equivalent of a spy chase in a Japanese horror manga. It’s pretty great.
