BUILT TO SPILL Expands There’s Nothing Wrong With Love 30th Anniversary Tour

The first time I ever saw Built To Spill live, I distinctly remember them selling T-shirts with clouds on them and, when I think about it now, I still regret not buying one. They were supporting their 1994 sophomore album, There’s Nothing Wrong With Love, at the time. The most notable track on the release has to be “Car,” an endearing indie song that would remain one of the closest things to a “hit” that Doug Martsch would ever achieve, but, the entire album is consistently great. Doug is an eternally modest character that, if asked about his legacy, would likely just mention something about a different production choice he would have made during its recording, but, for a lot of us, TNWWL is a genuine masterpiece. It’s a perfect record. There is no single release that I’ve listened to more times from beginning to end, and I’ve heard the individual tracks in concert enough times that I could edit them all together to create separate wholely unique live renditions of the album multiple times over. What I haven’t experienced, is BtS performing There’s Nothing Wrong With Love live in its entirety, but that’s all set to change this August.

In February, the indie-rock trio announced a pair of shows they would be co-headlining with Yo La Tengo. The first will take place in Doug‘s adopted home of Portland, Oregon on August 14th with a show at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle scheduled for the following night. For both shows it was specified that they would be “performing There’s Nothing Wrong With Love.” This announcement raised two very important questions. With this being the 30th anniversary of such a beloved and seminal indie rock album of the 90s, fans wanted to know if more dates were on the horizon for those who don’t live in the area. As someone enjoying my entitlement and DOES live in the area, I wondered if these shows would include the band playing “Preview,” the quick sampling of excerpts from “fake” songs that plays at the end of the album. The latter remains to be seen, but anyone afraid they might miss out will be happy to know that an extensive list of US tour dates for the There’s Nothing Wrong With Love tour has just been announced. Unfortunately, Yo La Tengo will not be joining them for these new dates, but with over 40 shows scheduled over August and September, the chances to see them have increased exponentially.

I could easily vomit up another 10-thousand words about how great and important this album is to me, but I’m trying to be better about these things. Plus, I should probably save my ravings in case I end up choosing to review the show. That said, please know that we highly recommend making it a priority to catch one (or more) of these dates if you’re able to pull it off. For those of you not overly familiar with TNWWL, you still have a handful of months to play it excessively. Don’t worry about getting burnt out; I’ve been listening to it for 3 decades and, while I just keep getting older, the music never has.
