ALFREDO II x Super7 Action Figures
The hip-hop super duo of The Alchemist & Freddie Gibbs have teamed with the Bay Area design house/toy manufacturer for a new collab – the latest addition in an unorthodox merch game
The Alchemist‘s merch game remains unrivaled for his latest collaboration with rapper, Freddie Gibbs. On their follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2020 LP, Alfredo, the hip-hop duo has adopted a Japanese organized crime theme, transitioning from the visuals of Italian pasta and the mafia to the Yakuza and ramen. As Al has done with other projects in the past, this album theme has been used as a jumping-off point to create a slew of related products ranging from apparel to comic books and now toys.
The first time around, the pair released an action figure set of themselves. With Alfredo II, they’ve done it again, only with a much higher quality and likeness to the product. By teaming up with Bay Area design house, Super7, the emcee and producer have brought in a manufacturer with a documented history of molding and designing figures for such hip hop luminaries as Slick Rick, ODB, The Beastie Boys, Grandmaster Flash, RZA, J Dilla, Ghostface, MF DOOM, and more. The toy company has even offered similar 2-pack releases for other artists, including multiple phases/variants for Run The Jewels (Meow The Jewels among them).
Created in the classic 3 3/4 scale made famous with Kenner‘s classic Star Wars line, these figures in this Super7 release are much smaller than the more bootleg-looking ALC and Gibbs figures in generic packaging that accompanied the first LP. That said, these are simply a lot cooler, complete with a full-color illustrated blister pack and accessories.
If that wasn’t enough, they’ve also added a few more shirt designs. One of the tees parodies the cover to the old NES game KUNG FU, while another is a play on the Raymond Pettibon artwork from the 1984 Black Flag album, My War. There is also a shirt featuring an image of the figures, themselves, as well as a hoodie designed to mirror the PlayStation 2 logo.
