Back in January of 2014, we published a post titled “KUNG FURY – THE BEST KICKSTARTER THAT EVER WAS?”  The gist of our conclusion to that undeniably hyperbolic suggestion was, “Maybe… it’s possible.”   As the official trailer for that campaign continued to gain traction and make its rounds through the world wide web — I’ve seen people still excitedly discovering/posting about it as recently as this week, even though it reached it’s goal over a year ago —  the support for the project seemed to be almost exclusively favorable.  And for those that can’t manage to get behind the idea of a film paying tribute to the genre of 80s police flicks by producing an action comedy about a “super kung fu cop” riding what appears to be a Commodore 64 console like a skateboard across a neon computer grid to travel back in time and have a martial arts showdown with Adolph Hitler, then… well… I guess, I can’t really manage to get behind those people either.

Here is a basic description via the kickstarter page:

The movie features: arcade-robots, dinosaurs, nazis, vikings, norse gods, mutants and a super kung fu-cop called Kung Fury, all wrapped up in an 80s style action packed adventure.”

“During an unfortunate series of events a friend of Kung Fury is assasinated by the most dangerous kung fu master criminal of all time; Adolf Hitler, a.k.a Kung Führer. Kung Fury decides to travel back in time, to Nazi Germany, in order to kill Hitler and end the Nazi empire once and for all.

Since we initially found out about Kung Fury, my belief has been that much of its strength lies in the fact that creator/writer/director, David Sandberg (operating under the production moniker of “Laser Unicorns”) isn’t from the United States at all, but, rather, Sweden.  Unapologetically adopting every cliche imaginable from the genre is what really makes the trailer look so promising, because it’s being filtered through the mind of an individual somewhat removed from the US culture of the time, just enough to provide him with a unique perspective that allows him to embrace it in its purest form and for its greatest qualities.   When you’re mixing in elements like cheesy digital effects, giant dinosaur-riding viking, Delorean DMC 12s, skateboarding street thugs, and Nintento Power Gloves into the aesthetic, it can easily come across as forced, or even like a self-conscious jab at our nation’s “embarrassing” past, but the love that Sandberg truly feels for the period, with all of it’s amazing “I don’t give a fuck, this shit is fucking awesome” attitude is undeniable, even just from what was showcased in the early trailer.  Whether or not this is the most fitting terminology to use or not, the taste-level that he’s displayed is dead on point, at least as far as the project that they are creating is concerned, and the filmmaker’s vision seems to be laser (unicorn) sharp.

Last week, kickstarter backers were emailed with a revealing update regarding the highly anticipated project.  The new announcement spoke of original music that had been created for the film and read as follows:

As you know, we have now moved into execution mode with the launch of the movie. What we haven’t told you so far, is that we, in the beginning of the project, felt that something was missing. To make the movie complete.

We found what the missing piece was a few months ago.

There is one thing all classic cop movies have in common. They have a great soundtrack. We decided we needed our own and reached out to some people to see if they could help us out.

Next Friday, this soundtrack will be released to you, and by the looks of it, resonate in eternity from that day forward… (hehe… just kidding… just a bit stoked about the fact that this is actually happening now…)

Can’t tell you who the singer is just yet as it would spoil the fun. But I can tell you that we will be giving the link to one of our very earliest backers to post on Reddit and we will send you the link as soon as that happens.

Yesterday (Wednesday 4/15/2015), a new email came through informing backers that the soundtrack would be launched today via the subreddit, r/KungFury.  As promised, a new video appeared this morning, further proving that the Laser Unicorn team really understands their target audience.  The following video for the song “True Survivor” shows Sandberg bringing another David on board for the project.  Of course, we’re speaking of Michael Knight himself, 80s icon and Germany‘s favorite pop singing sensation David “The Hoff” Hasselfhoff.  Check it out now!

Also announced was a LIVE LAUNCH – Q&A, stating that they “will be running a live feed inside the PS4 (and on Ustream) during the launch.”  Pop on over to see if it’s still going one.
