This Saturday, February 23rd (otherwise known as tomorrow), North Hollywood‘s Cella Gallery will be unveiling its latest exhibit.  Curated by Stephanie Chefas of Platinum Cheese, Something Wicked This Way Comes is a group show focusing on “the surreal and macabre.”  With contributions from 10 different hand-picked artists; including Hi-Fructose magazine co-founder, Annie Owens; a variety of styles and approaches will be on display, but, for the most part, the imagery presented will be something that you should be able to feel under your skin above all else.  There isn’t likely to be a whole lot of that cutesy stuff on hand that slips into so many of these group shows; rather, shit’s about to get ominous.  In relation to the art, you’re probably not going to be feeling like you’re dancing on sugar frosted unicorn dreams or giggling at quirky pop-culture references this time around, but you very well might experience the uncomfortable chill of being violated by an apparition (Jason Robards, is that you?), or stumble across an unsettling discovery, like finding glass in your meal.

Each of the artists presented has contributed multiple pieces to the exhibit, but we have a sample from each of them below to give you a preview of what to expect.  Check them out after the following information extracted from the press release.  After that, go check them out in person.

“On Saturday, February 23rd, Cella Gallery is delighted to present “Something Wicked This Way Comes”, a provocative group exhibition featuring multiple works from 10 innovative artists handpicked by Contemporary Art Curator, Stephanie Chefas.

A celebratory mix of the surreal and macabre, “Something Wicked This Way Comes”, delves the senses into ominous worlds and forsaken dreams. The exhibition is a composition of some of the most powerful contemporary artists whose inherent aesthetic is both visually rebellious and viscerally seductive. “Each artist was chosen based on their dark allure and ability to transform what naturally repels us into something utterly captivating,” states Chefas. “By consistently pushing conventional norms, these artists are simultaneously challenging the viewer as well as themselves.”

Through an assemblage of mixed media works, oil paintings, watercolor and graphite drawings, “Something Wicked This Way Comes” features the talent of Annie Owens, Christian Rex van Minnen, Christine Wu, Chrystal Chan, David Ball, Fulvio Di Piazza, Jana Brike, Jessica Ward, Judith Supine, and Michael Page. Expect to feel the hairs on your neck stand straight up; for something wicked this way comes.

The opening reception for “Something Wicked This Way Comes” takes place Saturday, February 23rd from 7-10pm, at Cella Gallery. The reception is open to the public, and the exhibition will be on view through March 16th, 2013.”
