[Preview] Miyazaki Art Show @ Spoke Art NYC

Spoke Art is no stranger to hosting tributes to influential filmmakers; from Wes Anderson, The Coen Brothers, and David Lynch, to Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, and Stanley Kubrick, they’ve tackled their share.  These group art shows have proven so successful for the gallery that the exhibits themselves have since become influential and honored in their own right.  The reason that it has worked is because, what each of these past selected filmmakers have all had in common is their own one-of-a-kind visions and aesthetics from which they have crafted very particular worlds unique unto themselves.  What unifies each of the exhibits that relied on them for inspiration was an impressive selection of visual artists with the ability to filter that work through their own individual aesthetics.

Back in February, Spoke Art hosted one such tribute to celebrate the work of legendary Japanese master of animation, Hayao Miyazaki.  Through his work as a film director, producer, screenwriter, animator, author and manga artist. the co-founder of Studio Ghibli film and animation studio has brought the world such critically acclaimed and beloved films as My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, among numerous others.  Now, on Friday September 29th, Spoke will take their tribute cross country to their New York City gallery, where over 100 different international artists will, yet again, interpret Miyazaki’s worlds and characters by employing such varied disciplines as sculpture, cross-stitch, paintings, limited edition prints, and even paper cuts.  This time, however, it will only run for 3-days as a brief pop-up show, which means that, if you want to catch this one, you better be on top of it.
