Preview: Miniature Art – A Group Exhibition of Miniaturists @ Beinart Gallery [Melbourne]
Over two dozen international artists assemble to showcase “sculptures and paintings created on a mind-bendingly small scale. “
Two years ago, we posted a preview for a group show happening in Melbourne, Australia. The venue hosting the event was the Beinart Gallery, which began as Beinart Collective in 2003, when artist, Jon Beinart, assembled “an online community of strange and imaginative figurative artists.” From their beginning as an online gallery highlighting the work of Jon and small group of fellow Australian artists, they would swiftly expanded into a much broader international network encompassing hundreds of artists from around the world. Beinart would publish numerous art books before, eventually, setting up shop in a physical brick and mortar location in 2016, dedicated to continuing their efforts promoting work from the new contemporary art scene. The group exhibit that we posted about back in 2018 was titled “Small Works.” This weekend, Beinart have stepped it up — or down — with a brand new show focused on on pieces created on an even tinier scale.
The title for Miniature Art: A Group Exhibition Of Miniaturists is a fairly self-explanatory one. Co-curated by master miniaturist Joshua Smith, the show brings together over two dozen artists crafting highly detailed art pieces at a reduced scale. From Smith‘s “scratch built sculptures of urban decay” to Russian sculptor, Salavat Fidai‘s microscopic masterworks carved into lead pencil tips, the details and precision in so much of the contributions for this show are mind-boggling. There’s a whimsical nature to a display like this, as well as an incredible ability to transport the viewer into particular submissions that operate like miniature art installations. We love this theme and it’s a really easy one to get excited about and get behind. It opens Saturday, March 7th. Go check it out if you’re in the area.
