Following their tradition of paying tribute to some of the most recognizable, forward thinking, and influential filmmakers in modern history — Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese, The Coen Brothers, Quentin Tarantino — this Saturday, September 6th,  San Francisco‘s Spoke Art gallery hosts their next group exhibit honoring one man who seemed like the next inevitable choice: Stanley Kubrick.

When Kubrick‘s name comes up, there’s always one definitive masterpiece that comes to mind first, but the amazing thing about the master of cinema is that it could be one of any number of his films for any number of people at any given time.  Unlike many other great auteurs who are able to create brilliant worlds that engulf the viewer entirely, Stanley was never trapped in his own aesthetic, always able to transition into a brand new, yet equally potent, environment, storyline, and structure from one work to the next.  Think about The Shining or 2001: A Space Odyssey, and then consider the fact that the same director also created Full Metal Jacket, A Clockwork Orange, Dr Strangelove, and Lolita.  In fact, Kubrick actually directed the Oscar-winning Kirk Douglas and Sir Laurence Olivier classic, Spartacus (1960).  It’s unheard of for a director, or any artist, to create such a tremendous impact on popular culture and maintain that level of relevance through 5 decades.

For this art show tribute, the gallery invited over 60 incredibly talented figures from the visual art world to reinterpret elements from Kubrick‘s legacy of their choosing, filtering them through their own respective mediums and individual aesthetics.  Kubrick: An Art Show Tribute to The Films of Stanley Kubrick will be on display throughout the month, but if you’re able to make it out to the opening this Saturday, it’s highly recommended; a handful of complimentary prints created specifically for the event will be given to those who get there early and many of the artists will be in attendance.  Check out the list of contributors, followed by event details, and a selection of preview images below.
