PREVIEW – IN DREAMS 2: DAVID LYNCH TRIBUTE ART SHOW @ SPOKE ART [NYC]
Over 80 artists of various disciplines from around the world come together to pay tribute to one of America’s most iconic filmmakers
Three years ago, The Spoke Art gallery hosted a group exhibit titled In Dreams, paying tribute to the work of inimitable cult filmmaker and icon, David Lynch. Unfortunately, unlike some of their other highly successful, director-themed shows that they’ve revived for multiple installments — the annual Bad Dad‘s group exhibit paying tribute to Wes Anderson, or their Quentin VS Coen shows, in which contributors honored both Tarantino and the legendary film Brothers — there was never any followup for Lynch… until now. David Lynch has never really been the type of director that makes films anyone would expect a sequel to, himself, but back when his groundbreaking venture into the small screen, Twin Peaks ended in 1991, it included a promise from none other than Laura Palmer, the deceased teenage girl — or, at least a version of her from a demonic alternate dimension — whose murder the television series revolved around, when she stated, “I’ll see you again in 25 years.” Next month, Lynch keeps his promise as the Twin Peaks reboot hits Showtime as, arguably, the most anticipated program of the year. Meanwhile, the follow up to In Dreams slides in with impeccable timing, opening at Spoke Art‘s New York City location this Saturday, April 8th.
It’s difficult to overstate the importance of Twin Peaks and its impact on the television landscape, but it’s safe to say that shows like The X-Files or even Stranger Things wouldn’t likely exist without the auteur redefining what was capable to approach/achieve through a weekly series, let alone on Network television. Prior to it’s release, David Lynch had already made his mark on the film world with such features as the midnight movie classic, Eraserhead; multi-Oscar nominated The Elephant Man; his interpretation of Frank Herbert‘s sci-fi epic Dune; and the twisted neo-noir mystery, Blue Velvet; and, afterward, went on to further define his unmistakable aesthetic by releasing surrealist mind-benders like Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive. It’s an enviable legacy that he’s constructed for himself, but for most people, the Lynch name begins and ends in the directorial/film world with very little awareness of his achievements beyond that. Over the years, Lynch has been behind numerous short films and documentaries, had a reoccurring cameo on Louie, and even voices his animated doppelganger, Gus the bartender, on The Cleveland Show. Along with his work alongside Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse as part of the project Dark Night of the Soul, David has continued to release material of his own through the Sacred Bones label (Moon Duo, The Men, Amen Dunes, John Carpenter, Marissa Nadler, etc). Those who have seen our coverage of both his photography work and paintings in the past will also be aware that David is a fine artist in his own right. This provides a deep well of material to draw from and, according to the press release, this week’s art show will include contributions from “over 80 artists from around the globe,” working in “a variety of mediums, such as painting, sculptures and limited edition fine art prints.” If you’re in the area, make sure to pop into Spoke Art and check this thing out in person. There are definitely worse ways to fill the void until Dale Cooper returns on May 21st.
