Preview: Exploring the New Contemporary Movement VI – Presented by POW WOW HAWAI’I [HONOLULU]
Held during Hawaii’s world renowned mural festival, LA’s Thinkspace gallery curates its 6th annual exhibit from an impressive roster of international talent
I’m aware that it’s pretty fucking cold in the mid-west right now, so I probably shouldn’t be complaining. That being said, Seattle doesn’t know how to handle extreme temperature conditions on either end of the spectrum. It’s snowing like a damn fool in this city and, whenever this happens, everything shuts down. My son hasn’t had a full day of school all week, business are shut closed all over the place and a metro bus was stuck in front of our home tonight, because it couldn’t make it’s way up the hill. I spent my birthday in an emergency room, discovering that almost definitely, need to have my gallbladder removed, but I can’t even make an appointment to meet with the general surgeon, because their office is closed along with everything else. Even worse is that more and more chilling weather is expected. Some people fly south for the winter like birds. I tried that last year at this time, after being encouraged by a friend who was swimming in a creek to visit them. When I got to Grass Valley, CA, it snowed. While I was in Berkeley, it poured down rain. Even when I was in Atlanta in November, the consistent 90 degree pattern of weather was snuffed out by a hurricane. You know where it is in the 80s right now? Honolulu. That’s why this is the time of year that the annual mural festival Pow! Wow! Hawai’i also takes place.
Now in it’s 9th year, Pow! Wow! will be returning to Kaka’ako between February 8th and the 17th with an impressive roster of renowned international artists creating murals, along with numerous connecting events. The official website encourages those who can make it to “come down to the neighborhood to witness renowned artists at work, such as Shepard Fairey, How Nosm, ONEQ, Logan Hicks, and more. As well as join us for a block party alongside the Honolulu Night Market, an exhibition curated by Thinkspace, artist talks, screenings, indoor soccer matches with Kicks to the Pitch and Paradise Soccer Club, break dancing battles with the Endless Summer Jam, as well as a BAMP concert with Eminem at Aloha Stadium.”
As for Thinkspace, the Culver City, California-based gallery is coming through with a slew of artists for their 6th annual exhibit, titled Exploring The New Contemporary Movement. Although some pieces slightly fluctuate in size, the concept behind the group show states that “This year’s exhibition showcases 12×12 inch (30×30 cm) works from Thinkspace Family members spanning the globe.” The exhibit opens this Saturday, February 9th, during the night market, so… if you’re going to be out there, just make sure to squeeze this one into your schedule between stuffing your mug with delicious local delicacies and attempting to surf with a haunted tiki around your neck a la Greg Brady.
Here is a list of folks providing pieces for this event…
