PREVIEW: CONJOINED 8 Group Exhibit Curated by CHET ZAR @ COPRO GALLERY [SANTA MONICA]
Images & details for Copro Gallery’s 8th annual sculpture & 3D-focused group exhibit, curated by dark art painter/sculptor Chet Zar
This Saturday, January 20th, Santa Monica‘s Copro Gallery will present the 8th installment of their annual CONJOINED group exhibit, curated, as always, by the inimitable Chet Zar. Zar‘s many accomplishments involve a career in makeup and special effects for the film industry (Hellboy, Planet of the Apes, etc), before transitioning into doing highly acclaimed video and live 3D effects work for Tool, and ultimately settling into his role as a notable force in the painting and fine art world. Both his background and his notoriety as a master of dark art and the macabre play into his curation for these exhibits, which is described as a “3-Dimensional Group Sculpture Art exhibition” featuring “Classic sculptures, Hyperreal life like models, Surreal assemblages, mixed media paintings, Art, Toys, live body painting performance, live music, virtual reality event and other conjoined works.” As in past years, Conjoined 8 will involve an impressive selection of contributors that include artists exploring less orthodox disciplines than you might find in other shows throughout the fine art world. Among them, this installment will involve brilliant hyperrealist, Kazuhiro Tsuji (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Hellboy); special effects sculptor/makeup wizard, Ikeda Akihi (X Men Origins: Wolverine, Shutter Island, Alien VS Predator, Transformers, Death Proof, etc.); rogue taxidermist, Sarina Brewer; special fx wunderkind, Nicholas Winstead (American Horror Story): water color master/Hi-Fructose magazine co-founder, Annie Owens; body painter, Michael Rosner; and a plethora of other talented international artists working in a variety of disciplines.
For the opening, many of the artists will be in attendance and, with 3-Dimensional art in particular, seeing these pieces up close provides exponential benefit. This year’s festivities include live music, live body painting, a virtual reality experience, and a food truck. The suggested donation is only $5, so if you are going to be in the Santa Monica area and are able to make it out for this thing, you should probably do it.
