Pat Perry – “Especially Terrific” Solo Exhibition @ Fort Wayne Museum Of Art [Fort Wayne, IN]
The Detroit-based painter explores the beauty in scenes of American suburban and midwestern life
Last year, we posted a preview for a solo exhibition by Detroit artist, Pat Perry. Which World was held at the Hashimoto Contemporary gallery in Los Angeles and featured paintings of still-lifes and situations that could be considered otherwise mundane, if not for the energy behind them. At the heart of Perry‘s work is heart itself. You can feel the soul of a sunbleached above ground pool, or imagine yourself within the various familiar, yet abstract, scenarios. I went into much more detail about his work in that previous piece, if you really feel like going down that hole, but this post isn’t so much about that. This post is about how he’s back with a brand new exhibition “of work that surveys scenes of American suburban and midwestern life from which beauty might arise” which is opening this month in Indiana.
Titled Especially Terrific, the show contains similar elements and themese that the visual artist has been exploring from his Craigslist series to beautiful natural light images that reveal more and more about a situation the more you inspect them. Perry provides some insight into this new work and the backstory of the exhibition title below.
“Especially Terrific has something to do with exceptions. I was reading a book about architecture last year, and how when we see a perfectly poised, harmonious landscape or structure, it moves us because we know that it is the exception in a world that is indifferent and chaotic, or to put it another way, a world that is “nasty, brutish and short.” Paintings somehow temper the parts of experience that are especially terrifying to confront. As paintings, those parts are quieted down and transformed into something oddly serene. You venture into your mental wilderness and are facing this monster that you know will devour you, and though you can’t defeat it, you reckon with it by doing something productive and creative.“
Especially Terrific opens Saturday, August 10th at the Fort Wayne Museum Of Art in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
