This Saturday, May 10th, a brand new group show will be opening at Brassworks Gallery in Portland, Oregon. Titled Connections, the exhibition features over two dozen contemporary visual artists working in various disciplines. What’s the theme, exactly? I’m not 100% sure. As ironic as it sounds, I’m not entirely sure what is supposed to connect the artists and their work showcased in Connections. There are so many types of connections, from physical and sexual to spiritual and emotional. People can not only be bound to each other, but to places, objects, and memories, as well. Sometimes, they are bound to each other through their connections to places, objects, and memories, not to mention shared history or trauma. If the concept behind this exhibition is for artists to interpret the idea of connection through the creation of their pieces, then a lot could be interpreted in them. In the end, what we really have is a collection of work that highlights the unique aesthetics from a selection of talent worth checking out. Themes often tend to work best when they are utilized as a jumping-off point, anyway. When the work truly shines, you should be able to catch a glimpse of who these respective artists are inside. Here’s hoping you find something you connect with.
The opening reception is free and open to the public.
