Preview: “CONJOINED (6)6(6)” Chet Zar Curated Exhibit @ Copro Gallery [Santa Monica]
Images & details for Copro Gallery’s 6th annual sculpture & 3D-focused group exhibit, curated by dark art painter/sculptor Chet Zar
This Saturday, January 16th, Chet Zar will return to Santa Monica‘s Copro Gallery to present his 6th installment of the CONJOINED exhibit that he curates every year. Zar is an accomplished artist of multiple disciplines, who transitioned from a career in makeup and special effects for the film industry (Hellboy, Planet of the Apes, etc), into doing highly acclaimed video and live 3D effects work for Tool, before settling into his role as a notable force in the painting and fine art world. Both his background and his notoriety as a master of dark art and the macabre play into his curation for these exhibits, which primarily feature 3-dimensional works and assemble a list of impressive contributors that include artists exploring less orthodox disciplines than you might find in other shows throughout the fine art world. Among them, this installment will involve returning artists like brilliant hyperrealist, Kazuhiro Tsuji (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Hellboy); rogue taxidermists, Sarina Brewer and Emi Slade; set designer, Daniel Saks; and Rebecca Rose, with her trademark wearable pieces known as “sculpturings.”
The opening for this show isn’t free, but many of the artists will be in attendance and there are some really impressive pieces that need to be seen up close to fully appreciate; well worth far beyond the modest $6 price of admission. Adding to this years festivities “there will also be live music by The Steady 45’s, live body painting by Nix Herrera and Michael Rosner and free virtual reality demos by Kevin Mack!” If you are going to be in the Santa Monica area and are able to make it out for this opening… seriously, just go to this. If you’re surrounded by a bunch of indecisive wet blankets, you might have to be the one to step up and make the decision this time and drag everybody’s ass out of the house to do something worthwhile. I have faith and know that you have it in you.
Here’s a list of the folks providing pieces for this event…
