Chet Zar Is Selling Random Monster Head Sketches For $100
The dark art master known for his work with TOOL & on such films as Hellboy, The Ring, and Darkman is offering signed original mystery portraits

We’ve posted about Chet Zar numerous times over the years, but for those less familiar, here’s some brief background on the painter/illustrator/makeup and digital effects artist/all-around creative. Early on, he established a respectable career in makeup and special effects for the film industry (Hellboy, The Ring, Darkman, Planet of the Apes, etc.), before transitioning into doing acclaimed video and live 3D effects work for Tool, and ultimately settling into his role as a notable force in the painting and fine art world. As an accomplished, sought-after, and highly respected figure in the underground contemporary and dark art movements, Chet‘s work has the potential to fetch quite a bit of money. For those of you who ever wanted to own something from him, but felt it was out of your price range, your time may have finally come. From now through this Sunday, March 23, Zar will be offering mystery monster portraits for $100 a piece in his shop.
The artist just announced the sale through this reluctantly-made video from his Instagram account in which he bemoans the need to “appease this shit fuck algorithm” we’ve all encountered on that bozo-ass platform.
As stated in his post, what Zar is offering are not prints, but original hand-drawn and signed illustrations. Each “random monster head sketch” will be drawn on 9-inch x 12-inch, 70 lb Canson drawing paper. If you choose to take advantage of this opportunity to own a Chet Zar original (or 2 or 3…), what you receive with be a mystery! Pictured here are simply examples of the sort of things you could expect. To me, they feel like a fairly respectable size and, as these samples demonstrate, even Chet‘s sketches exhibit an impressive amount of depth, texture, and personality.
