Disco Pogo Announces New APHEX TWIN Book As Part Of Their Tribute Series
The 250-page hardcover assembles a collection of rare interview, essays, photos, oral histories, & music reviews
In 1993, a pair of UK students studying at Manchester Polytechnic University decided to start a bi-monthly music zine dedicated primarily to dance and club culture. Titled Jockey Slut, founders John Burgess and Paul Benney eventually expanded the publication into a successful magazine which broke ground covering topics like Detroit Techno and Chicago House, while featuring the first ever interviews and magazine covers for such future global phenomenons as Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk. The magazine would eventually be sold and adopt more of an online presence before shutting down in 2004, but the original founder resurfaced in recent years ready to get back into physical media. In many ways, their new bi-annual electronic mag, Disco Pogo, is a continuance of the Jockey Slut legacy with the incorporation of a website and a community component. Now 5 issues deep, the magazine is hefty publication with a focus on long form articles and original photography with cover photos featuring such artists as Grace Jones, Khruangbin, and their old pals Chemical Brothers. Their latest endeavor is a book honoring none other than electronic pioneer, Aphex Twin.
When Pogo Disco launched in 2021, it came on the heels of a book paying tribute to the late DJ/producer and acid house legend, Andrew Weatherall. The publishers explain: “After the success of the ‘A Jockey Slut Tribute To Andrew Weatherall’ book (published in 2020 and now sold out) we felt compelled to create something fresh.” Last year, they went on to publish and sell out the first printing of Daft Punk: We Were The Robots (A Disco Pogo Tribute), a book packed with exclusive content that not only includes old interviews and photos from those vintage issues of Jockey Slut, but new content and writings from contributors like James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) and features that span the group’s entire history. The upcoming Aphex Twin release promises something equally impressive.
Aphex Twin: A Disco Pogo Tribute will be a 250-page hardcover assembling a collection of rare interview, essays, photos, oral histories, and record reviews. Slated to ship in October, the timing coincides well with the 30th anniversay deluxe reissue of the iconic producer’s critically acclaimed sophomore album, Selected Ambient Works Vol. II.
The following is a more detailed breakdown of the new book via the product page:
“The next installment in the Disco Pogo Tribute series is the legendary electronic artist Aphex Twin. This follows the hugely successful Disco Pogo Tribute to Daft Punk. Like Daft Punk, the people behind Disco Pogo have had a long-standing relationship with Richard D. James for over 30 years via their 90s magazine Jockey Slut. The book is edited by Disco Pogo editor Jim Butler and features interviews, essays and features from the best music journalists working today. The book features an iconic cover portrait of Aphex by seminal photographer Wolfgang Tillmans, plus a huge amount of great photography of Richard since the very beginning from some of the best music photographers in the world. Thanks also to the designer of Aphex’s logo Paul Nicholson who has opened up his archives to us and also the assistance and support from the label homes of Aphex – Warp, R&S and Rephlex. Thanks also to the people behind Aphex fan website Lanner Chronicle. The book is hardback, 250 plus pages and is beautifully designed and printed of course.“
