Wild & Crazy COE Ed (David Allan Coe Live)

My friend Sean Prince was the one who told me about a performance by living Country legend, David Allan Coe at the grimey ass El Corazon here in Seattle as a suggestion for the site to cover.  My response to him was, “Looks like you’re our new writer“.
Coe, who is famous for such tracks as Long Haired Redneck and for writing such hits as Take This Job and Shove It for artists like Johnny Paycheck, has a bit of a checkered past.  He was born in 1939, has at least a handful of songs with the word “Nigger” actually in the title, and is an admitted murderer.  I was hesitant about the crowd mostly.  I’m Puerto Rican and Jewish so I took an educated guess that it probably wasn’t the best environment for me to show up in, however I would definitely try to set up some tickets for him and hopefully an interview.  Sean has Longhaired Redneck as his ringtone, plenty of Coe’s records, and can usually hold his own in over the top situations, so I figured he might fare better than I.  The tickets were no problem, but the interview didn’t seem too promising based on the letter that I recieved from the tour promoter, and I quote:
You have to direct that question to the tour manager at the gig. David rarely does interviews. But if hes in a good mood he might talk to you for 20 minutes before the show.”
The following is Sean Prince’s play by Play account of how it all went down.

Thirstin’ for More? (Trees Outside the Academey reviewed)

Easily one of the most influential musical groups of the last two decades is Sonic Youth.  Since their first official concert in 1981, they have consitently been pumping out new releases and performing at least semi-regularly.  Last year I caught them as they toured for their latest group release, Rather Ripped, and I was blown away by what an enthralling live act they continue to be 25 years later.  This year front man Thurston Moore has released another solo effort on his own Ecstatic Peace label titled Trees Outside the Academy.  I have plenty to ramble on about this album, and believe me I will, but in a word I’d say, “Gobuyitrightnowit’sreallygood“. The Real Ratatouille?

ratatouille-real.jpg

A month or so ago, an old friend of mine was in town and we were having a couple of PBRs at a local bar.   We were talking about the website when he said to me “You should talk with Aanis, you know that Ratatouille movies about him“.  Aanis is a mutal friend of ours that he still sees regularly but that I haven’t seen in years.  I was pretty skeptical at first.  In fact, I thought that he was just fucking around with me, but I got Aanis’ number from him anyway and gave him a call.  I reached an answering machine and left a message to let him know that I wanted to find out what what all of the this Ratatouille jive was all about.  I hadn’t heard anything back and figured that all he would say to me was, “KB is full of shit!  He thinks that I look like that fucking PIXAR cartoon“.  A couple of weeks ago, however, I did recieve an email from Aanis and what he had to say was a completely different story all together.  I felt that the email was compelling and I told him that I was going to post it, especially since the much hyped DVD release was yesterday.  He agreed and sent an added paragraph which has been added to the beginning. Below is his statement unedited and its content does not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of MonsterFresh.com.
Thank you

“ Most people regret the things they say when they are drunk or under the influence. It is quite the opposite for me, sobriety makes me do and say crazy shit. Needless to say I wrote this SOBER first thing in the morning. It’s something absolutely true and not very shocking; ABC/Disney is unoriginal and racist. Ratatouille is the latest monstrosity to devour American’s Federal Reserve notes like so much cheese, and I will tell you a firsthand account of being exploited by Mickey with both intellectual property and likeness rights. I will never watch this film unless I get a Canal St. bootleg and even then I would rather spend my $.99 on a 20 oz of purple flavored Faygo. Don’t pay for anything TWDC (The Walt Disney Company) makes or is associated with!! ” –Aanis Misallati (more…)

TRAINed Americans (The Darjeeling Limited & American Cinema)

Posted by Dead C | Film,Reviews | Friday 2 November 2007 10:50 am

wes-anderson-no-limitpsd.jpg

There are only few artists’ projects that I am ever really interested in beforehand and who’s work I actually anticipate coming out.  Ween’s new album La Cucaracha falls under that category and so does any new Wes Anderson film.  This may indeed be a character flaw for some one who is trying to get a website off of the ground with a strong basis in pop-culture and media, but there is an intense interest to cover and promote only the projects that we feel actually have merit.  Of course, if I feel equally as strong that a product is lacking, I am also apt to plunge on it like a pitbull attack to a toddler’s jugular.

I tried to see Anderson‘s latest film The Darjeeling Limited on multiple occasions but, everytime that I thought it was out, it wasn’t.  It had one of those slow drawn out releases where it would only pop up in select theaters in certain states.  That’s where the “LIMITED” part of the title comes into play I suppose.   It’s sort of like, ”If New Yorkers and folks in Monterey, Ca like it that’s how we’ll know it’s good“.  Whatever, when it finally did hit Seattle it was playing at a LANDMARK theater which plays limited release films.  I went and saw it there.  I stopped smoking for a little while and, apparently, that inhibits my abilitly to write anything but, now that it finally has a much more accessable nationwide release, it still seems like a good enough time to do a review.
